ESCA’s biggest fundraising events are charity hitchhikes Race2Paris, Race2??? and Jailbreak, coordinated by Edinburgh RAG (Raising and Giving). Race2Paris takes place annually in semester one, with approximately 40 pairs racing to France as quickly as possible without spending any of their own money on transport. Teams must hitch lifts or raise donations for public transport, before meeting up in Paris with all the other teams for a weekend of fun! Race2??? takes place in semester two, with the destination changing every year and announced just weeks before; typically a European city much further afield than Paris. Previous years have seen our volunteers racing as far afield as Amsterdam, Berlin and Prague! Jailbreak challenges participants to get as far away from Edinburgh as possible in 48 hours by begging and borrowing car journeys and flights. Previous participants have made it to Gran Canaria and Chicago!

Our hitchhikers always come back with amazing and hilarious stories about the people they’ve met and places they’ve seen. Participating in a hitch is a great way to travel and gain new experiences, while raising money for a UK registered charity of your choice. The most recent Race2Paris raised £34,000, with all the teams raising their £500 minimum fundraising and many exceeding this.
