WHAT WE DO

F.O.P stands for FONELISCO Orphanage Project. We’re a student society that supports the orphanage otherwise known as Foundation Of New Life for Street Children and Orphans. It is a non-profit, non governmental organisation, without any political and religious affiliations, based in Mwanza, a city on the shores of Lake Victoria in Tanzania.

The orphanage was set up to help integrate street children back with their families where possible and appropriate, and provides funding for education, healthcare, food and shelter for the children. Presently the orphanage provides three square meals for over 60 people, for just 15 pounds a day, demonstrating that a little does go a long way.

This is where we come in. Firstly, our goal is to provide help by recruiting volunteers to send out to the orphanage over summer. As a group, we carry out activities to help foundraise the basic cost of the volunteers’ trip, i.e., flights, insurance, accommodation and vaccinations.

Secondly, by volunteering and fundraising, we aim to help alleviate some of the pressure of daily costs to ensure that healthcare, educational, and other basic needs such as food and shelter are never sacrificed. However, we make it a point not to make it a case of regular hand-outs, as we are also very interested in getting FONELISCO started on a sustainable project that will make them more independent, provide long term benefits, and help the orphanage grow.
