what's involved

As you can imagine, there are a lot of issues related to Bungee Jumping. If you are not sure that you can take part, or want to know a bit more before you commit yourself, read this page or download our General Information sheet from here.

are there any restrictions?

Yes! If you weigh under 6 stones or over 26 stones you can not jump. If you are under 16 years old you will need written parental consent. If you are over 50 yrs old you will need a doctors certificate to say you are in good health.

You will not be able to jump if you have heart conditions, high blood pressure, suffer from epilepsy, you are pregnant or if you have a bad back. If you think you have a condition that might prevent you from jumping, please check with your own doctor. A list of the medical restrictions can be found in the Terms and Conditions which you can download from here.

what is the jump height?

Typically jump are made from heights in excess of 80 metres (240 feet) and the operators can maintain a jump ratio of around 25 per hour. In the past, it has been known for bungee jump events of this kind to get through over 220 jumpers on one day.

are there any strong forces on the jumper?

NO! Jumps are carried out using military shock cord which absorbs the g-forces involved gradually so that the jumper is slowed at a steady rate, giving a smooth and thrilling bounce.

is it safe?

Safety is everyone's number one priority. The bungee operators we use (Bungee Extreme) are the only company in the UK to carry, as standard for every event, public liability insurance cover of £10 million which is now required by many local authorities.

what should I wear?

We suggest casual outdoor clothing. Fancy dress can be catered for, however we do reserve the right to decline to jump anyone in an outfit which could compromise safety procedures.

You will not be allowed to jump wearing glasses. It is possible to jump wearing contact lenses, however we advise against them, and cannot accept responsibility if they are lost.

sponsorship

A minimum of £150 sponsorship must be raised (hopefully more) before the jump fee (£50) can be reimbursed. When you reach the £150 target, your fee is deducted from your sponsorship and the remainder goes to Comic Relief. If you raise £155 in sponsorship, you jump for free and the charity gets £105. Your jump fee deposit MUST BE paid when you hand in your form. The deadline for all sponsorship to be paid is Friday May 4th, 2007.

Please use the official ESCA sponsorship form (click here) or set up an online sponsor page at http://esca.workwithus.org. Please ask all sponsors to make any cheques payable to Edinburgh Students' Charities Appeal.
